MapSherpa Locating Service: High Quality Interactive Maps Based on CGDI Data

MapSherpa, the new Internet service launched under this project, will make high-quality interactive maps of Canada, at the national, provincial, regional and MapSherpa, the new Internet service launched under this project, will make high-quality interactive maps of Canada, at the national, provincial, regional and urban levels, available over the Web. Using MapSherpa's custom applications, people will be able to add their own data to maps, which they can then save for inclusion in reports and other media. Among other innovations, the project will join interactive mapping with shockwave flash technology, a Web technology not currently well used with mapping. When complete, MapSherpa will provide a live connection between flash technology and the public MapServer, presenting Canadians with geospatial data in a variety of useful and attractive formats. The project partners will use the technology linkage to revamp two Web mapping applications, one at the Geological Survey of Canada and one at Environment Canada, to make them more user-responsive. In addition, the project will add flash enhancement to QUEST, a commercial tool product for modelling the environmental impacts of local decision making. Along with adding flash support to MapServer technology, the project will enhance MapServer capabilities by incorporating new industry standards, further developing the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure.
