Pliable Display Technology for GeoConnections (original project title: PliableGIS for GeoConnections)(PDF format)

When people look at geospatial datasets on-line, they often encounter the problem of viewing large coverage areas and high-density information on limited computer screens. Current viewing technologies, like zoom and pan, are not tailored to help a geospatial data user navigate, analyze and interpret a detailed region on a compressed map outline, or understand how the details fit into the surrounding image. To address these limitations, this project will produce a Pliable Display Technology (PDT) Internet Client to improve viewing of geospatial information. With its innovative lens technology, the PDT application will supply users with viewing and editing tools that create a virtual magnifying glass effect. Users will be able to look at selected smaller regions (such as land parcels or census blocks) in detail, and move them at will, without losing sight of the larger surrounding area (such as the city or country) and its navigational cues. Users will also be able to control the size, shape and magnification of the lens. By providing uninterrupted viewing of selected geospatial areas along with their surroundings, PliableGIS technology will enable Canadians to access and visualize geospatial data easily and effectively over the Internet.
