Web Map Services Authoring and Management and Its Application to Oceans Management Internet Mapping

Increased interoperability among organizations wishing to share and integrate geospatial data is the overall aim of this project. The project company intends to expand its current software for spatial data management and metadata creation, SDM-geo, by adding to it a Web Map Service authoring toolkit. The toolkit will increase the software’s usefulness by enabling users to publish and integrate data from a variety of Web Map Servers. This way, users can choose whichever Web-based mapping technologies suit their purposes, rather than having to adopt a standardized solution. The authoring toolkit will not only let people create Web Map Services that comply with "Open GIS" specifications, it will also allow them to create customized maps from diverse sources. In a pilot project, Fisheries and Oceans Canada will use the enhanced SDM-geo software in its Oceans Management Internet Mapping Application. This new on-line application will give the department's managers access to regional geographic data and mapping technologies, leading to more coordinated ocean management. Also, individuals and organizations will be able to use the application to view the factors affecting marine management, as well as to contribute to decision making themselves by integrating their own datasets on-line.
