Lake of the Woods (AKRC)

The Anishinaabeg of Kabapikotawangag Resource Council (AKRC) was founded in 1997 to deliver programs and services, and to develop economic activities and technological capabilities within its six member First Nations in the Lake of the Woods area.

The AKRC is in the process of developing a Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled Resource Management Unit (RMU), with responsibility for compiling and managing traditional and contemporary land use information. The RMU’s first task is to build a Digital Traditional Ecosystem and Land Use Knowledge Library.

In partnership with SCI and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, AKRC will build the hardware/software/data infrastructure for the Library, as well as training staff in the use of GIS and Global Positioning Systems (GPS). The Library will be used for land use and resource management, and cultural heritage protection and education.
