West Nipissing

The recent amalgamation of the Corporations of the Town of Cache Bay, Sturgeon Falls, Caldwell, Field, Springer and other unincorporated lands into the Corporation of the Municipality of West Nipissing has created the need for amalgamating its land resource information. It recognizes that the only effective way to manage this data is in a geographic information system and has begun to acquire digital data through data capture and sharing agreements with various organizations.

The biggest challenge facing the Corporation of The Municipality of West Nipissing regarding GIS pertains to the lack of expertise and base data essential for a successful system implementation. In their municipality, the incorporation of parcel/assessment information and drainage data into a GIS is a high priority. Because of the recent amalgamation, they are required to manage property issues using paper copies of assessment maps. This is expensive and inefficient and causes long delays, which often frustrate members of the community. Also, the municipality is a rural area consisting of primarily flat lands that creates a management concern for staff and has resulted in many complaints from local residents.

In the pilot project, staff will learn the basic skills required to capture, analyze and maintain both drainage and parcel (spatial and attribute) data using the equipment and software acquired through the SCI project. Although contractors may be hired to create drainage and parcel data in the future as parts of other funded projects, it is essential that staff understand how spatial data is created, how attribute data is attached to spatial entities and how they can use the tools within their GIS to quickly and efficiently make municipal decisions.

The objective of this project is to create a strong foundation for the continued development of the Corporation of The Municipality of West Nipissing's GIS.
