Tmixw Research is a department of the Nicola Tribal Association (NTA) dealing with traditional knowledge and its use within the traditional territories of the 5 Nlaka'pmux Bands represented by the NTA. Since 1997, Tmixw Research has been working to gather and store traditional use and knowledge into a GIS. Tmixw Research now wishes to move forward by beginning to analyze the gathered information. It is hoped that analysis and compilation of the 330 GIS themes that make up the Traditional Use Study will reveal Nlaka'pmux Cultural Landscapes, that is, spatial areas that indicate or 'tell a story' about ancient cultural activities and knowledge. These thematic layers will show regions of high, moderate and low use. These Landscapes will be used to address co-management issues at the land use planning process level. Subsequently, this information will be the basis for developing First Nation Management Areas within the Merritt Timber Supply Area (TSA). This project will involve building the capacity within Tmixw to access and analyze the information that has been gathered.
