Common Web Services enable community-driven applications in British Columbia

GeoConnections and the British Columbia Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management are working together to enable users to discover and access British Columbia's geospatial data. People with interests in resource, coastal, and marine planning and management will benefit most from this capability.

To date, B.C.'s effort has involved three distinct projects: the Land and Resource Data Warehouse (LRDW) project, the Digital Image Management (DIM) program, and the Cooperative Ocean Information Network for the Pacific Region (COINPacific) project. The Common Web Services undertaking allows each project to save time and money by building a common core of web service functionality. For instance, sometimes different models of cars use the same engine, and a similar economy of scale approach applies here. Deliverables from this project will include the common web services components of the Land and Resource Data Warehouse, the DIM discovery and access application, and the COINPacific Web Mapping application. On completion, a fully functional DIM discovery application and a fully functional COINPacific web mapping application, based on a suite of Common Web Services, will be available to their respective user communities.
