Internet Data Delivery of NatureServe Canada Network Data Sets

NatureServe Canada plans to make aggregated data for more than 5,000 aquatic, plant, and animal species accessible over the Internet. Given the Federal Species at Risk Act and parallel provincial legislation, governments, the natural resources and energy sectors, and others greatly need authoritative, accurate, location-based information on species at risk. Currently held by NatureServe Canada's member Canadian Conservation Data Centres (CDCs), the aggregated data will comply with Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure standards.

As well, in a pilot project, NatureServe Canada intends to assist two CDCs—BC and Ontario—to serve their occurrence data over the Internet.

Organizations assessing environmental impacts or making land- or water-use decisions can integrate the biodiversity data layers generated by this project with other data layers. This integration will offer researchers and environmentalists greater insight into the risks that Canadian species face from pollution, commercial and residential development, and climate change.
