A CGDI-enabled Portal to Support Decision Making for Public Health and Land Planning
This project will equip the Region of Waterloo, located west of Toronto, to share location-based or “geospatial” information more readily among its departments and with other organizations. Specifically, the project will create an application (a web portal) that will blend map services to support community-health decision making. The project will break down data silos, turn raw data into geospatial information, provide broader access to web-based maps while respecting confidentiality, and create efficiencies by reducing the number of one-off mapping projects undertaken.
The Region expects its population, now at half a million, to increase 40 percent over the next 30 years. By integrating geospatial information into web-based maps, the Region will be better able to plan for and manage this growth.
Relying on Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) standards, the project will further introduce the concept of shared map services to various Region of Waterloo departments and local organizations. Expected users of the portal include departments such as Public Health and Social Services, as well as national organizations such as the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Ultimately, the project will permit public health planners to understand the
relationship between developed areas and population health, and therefore better
shape the community to support the health of its residents.
