Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED)
This project will produce some 4300 data sets and contribute to the completion of the Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) layer. This data consists of regularly spaced ground elevation measurements. Three thousand of the data sets will come from the National Topographic Database, one thousand will be produced using remote sensing data, and the balance will come from validating 300 digital elevation data sets that Ontario provided in 2006. Many of the data sets apply to northern Canada.
This project is required to complete the CDED layer, which was started four years ago under the initial phase of the GeoConnections program. CDED data sets are very popular: they represent 80 percent of the data downloaded from the GeoBase portal.
CDED plays an important role in sustaining development and protecting the environment. Various organizations, such as Natural Resources Canada's Canadian Forest Service and Environment Canada, use CDED for a number of applications. These applications include assessing environmental and ecological impacts, analyzing water flow and water quality, studying climate change, and regenerating forests and wildlife habitats.
This project will involve producing CDED, fixing any inaccuracies in the source data files, and loading data into the GeoBase portal.
When the project is finished, the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) will gain a completed elevation data layer. Canadians will benefit from governments, companies, and citizens having a better understanding of northern Canada's landscape, an important aid to managing resources and the environment.
