Carrier Sekani Geospatial Toolset for land and natural resource planning
The Carrier Sekani Tribal Council (CSTC) and a number of other partners are collaborating in the development of a set of tools that will apply Aboriginal world-views in decision making regarding land and natural resource planning. This project will build upon strategies and applications developed through the Tsilhqot'in Stewardship Planning Portal, another GeoConnections co-funded project. The new project will use the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) to enable the aggregation of Carrier and Sekani traditional knowledge for use by the CSTC and member First Nation decision-makers.
The Carrier Sekani Geospatial Toolset project will implement and modify the Tsilhqot'in Stewardship Planning Portal technologies to meet the particular needs of the CSTC. It will create new tools for uploading and editing data and communicating in ways that mirror traditional methods of story telling. It will also create advanced tools for incorporating Aboriginal world-views, including 3-D visualization, that can be used to depict the landscape for Aboriginal people in a manner that reflects their values.
This project will provide an enhanced system for CSTC and member First Nations to better monitor land referrals and development projects within their traditional territories. It will also aid them in assessing the impact of development and in better communicating their concerns and solutions as they balance the social, environmental, and economic factors related to sustainable development.
