FOCUS ON:
Renewed GeoConnections
The 2010 Federal Budget announced renewed funding for the GeoConnections program. The Budget provides $11 million in funding over the next two years to continue development of the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) and to provide consolidated geographic-related information to Canadians via the Internet.

Grand River Information Network: Phase II Climate and Weather Monitoring for Decision-Making
This project will augment and enhance the Grand River Conservation Authority's (GRCA) ability to monitor and predict the impacts of severe rainfall. Severe rainfalls, which can produce floods, pose a risk for the public and for dam operations near affected rivers. As a watershed management agency, the GRCA must thoroughly understand both short- and long-term impacts of precipitation into the water cycle.
The project will employ Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) standards for data visualization and access into the Grand River Information Network. For example, the fusion of imagery data with rain gauge data will provide a best estimate of the location and volume of rainfall. The resulting enhanced visualization and data products, as well as real-time web services, will enable GRCA's flood operations staff to communicate more effectively with watershed partners and emergency response units.
Decision-makers will be able to capitalize on this project in many ways, for instance, when analyzing water budgets or responding to high or low water levels. The project will also aid research into water budget modeling and climate change.
