A geospatial portal to facilitate tourism planning and land use management

This project, by the Cree Outfitting and Tourism Association (COTA) and the Cree Trappers Association (CTA), will create a user-friendly Web-based portal and application to make location-based (“geospatial”) information accessible to Cree communities.

These communities will use this information to support research, discussion, planning, and decision making related to resource management and tourism development.

The portal will

  • incorporate traditional knowledge data sets with information and base maps (vector and satellite images) from distributed sources;
  • support applications based on visualization of map data, such as renewing outfitting permits or monitoring the environment;
  • allow the COTA and the CTA to share data with other Cree organizations and with all GeoConnections stakeholders; and
  • conform to the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure standards and specifications.

When the portal is complete, the inclusion of a Cree knowledge component in georeferenced format will contribute to delivering information to users via the Internet in an efficient and effective manner.
