Environment Canada and GeoConnections improve efficiency and effectiveness of environmental emergencies response
The Environmental Emergencies Management System (E2MS) is a national tool that will enable the dynamic exchange of information illustrating the impact to the environment from an environmental emergency. This tool will provide seamless access to information and expertise across jurisdictions and integrate disparate databases of topographic and thematic data.
Currently, the Environmental Emergencies Branch of Environment Canada is using multiple web-based systems meeting regional requirements. With increasing levels of integration between national and provincial emergency operations centres and emergency responders, as well as the enhanced awareness to communicate more efficiently and effectively with the new Government of Canada "security" portfolio, there is a requirement for the application of standards for interoperability and a national approach and technology toolset available to the secondary responders of the Environmental Emergencies Program.
E2MS will leverage common web services from the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure, as well as current and emerging national and international standards and specifications (e.g. FGDC, OGC, ISO, XML).
E2MS, by its nature, will integrate the expertise and knowledge of the environmental emergencies community of practice to support consistent environmental management of emergencies, and facilitate timely decision-making in support of the health and safety of Canada and Canadians.
As a result of this partnership with GeoConnections, Canadians will be provided with greater comfort and assurances during times of environmental emergencies.
