Cross-Canada workshops focused on partnerships and solving business problems

This spring, in tandem with the Geomatics Industry Association of Canada, GeoConnections representatives conducted a series of one-day consultation workshops across the country. These workshops enabled the geospatial information community to learn more about GeoConnections’ $60-million five-year renewal and encouraged stakeholders to comment on plans for the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI).

The sessions were attended by people who work in the geomatics industry or in a business sector that uses geospatial information—officials from all levels of government, industry executives, business analysts, policy-makers, technical professionals, and consultants. During the workshops, participants discussed fostering partnerships among Canada’s geomatics community, examined the CGDI’s future direction, and explored the role of geographic information as it pertains to key Canadian priorities, such as public health, public safety, sustainable development and the environment, and issues of importance to Aboriginal communities.

A forum to exchange ideas and discuss the future of the CGDI

Participants learned more about the preliminary plans for the renewed GeoConnections program and welcomed the opportunity to exchange ideas on using geospatial information to solve business problems. Participants also networked with other professionals from the local geomatics industry and from user communities.

The workshops stimulated discussion and encouraged the full participation of attendees. Speakers described the main business challenges facing their organizations or communities of practice, and these lead-in presentations set the stage for the lively dialogue that followed.

This spring’s workshops were the third such series that GeoConnections has coordinated in the past two years. They began in Regina on April 12 and wrapped up in Ottawa on June 16.
