Objectives:

To web-enable the FloodTrack flood surveillance service, allowing flood and emergency management personnel world-wide to use Canadian Earth Observation technology to monitor large scale floodplain inundation.

Outcomes / results:

This Internet portal brings together VPI’s web mapping/systems expertise and RADARSAT International’s RADARSAT satellite in order to simplify marketing and delivery of flood extent information to a wide spectrum of non-specialist users.  In addition to automating some of the communication processes, FloodTrack Online allows users to view flood extent on a web map, eliminating the need for customer training and infrastructure in geographic information systems.

Partnerships:

Vantage Point International Inc.

RADARSAT International Inc.

Technical benefits:

The potential users of FloodTrack are chosen by mother nature.  No one knows where in the world a flood event will occur. When a large flood event occurs, the consumers of flood extent information require low cost flood surveillance free of daunting technical barriers.  FloodTrack Online allows flood and emergency management personnel to request, order and view flood extent information using a simple web map interface.  Furthermore, FloodTrack Online mediates and simplifies communication between the user and RADARSAT planning, acquisition and processing systems.

Business benefits:

RADARSAT International enjoys access to Vantage Point’s proprietary tools and procedures for extraction of flood extent through a royalty licence agreement.  FloodTrack Online expands the market for flood extent surveillance to the mutual benefit of both organizations.  In addition, the Canadian Space Agency benefits through more royalties on data sales, and better visibility and relevance for the RADARSAT program.

Benefits to Canadians:

Canadians directly benefit by having a more responsive and capable flood surveillance capability for domestic use.  Furthermore Canadians benefit by more capable and relevant disaster response capability to benefit friendly nations around the world in times of need.
